Right Now - Puppy Injury

Poor Tripper in his sock bandage. Not sure how it happened. Might need a stitch tomorrow...

This Makes Me Happy - Snow Hike

Tripper just loves hiking in fresh snow! Wish I could get a good photo of him up to his neck in powder or pouncing on snowballs.

Winter Book List - February Review

I haven't done the best-est job of sticking to my reading intention list. I've * starred the books that weren't on my original winter book list

Audiobooks - chosen by the fact that they are unread on my Audible account
  1. Off to Be the Wizard (eh...)
  2. Peace From Broken Pieces (Hated this. So whiny. Played the victim and everything is everyone else's fault)
  3. Provenance by Laney Salisbury and Aly Sujo
  4. Accidentally on Purpose  (Eh. Average modern romance novel)
  5. Rapt by Winifred Gallagher (currently listening)
  6. The Aviator's Wife (good but took me a longer than average to finish)
  7. The Introvert Advantage
Nonfiction - some of these are to fulfill my winter goals, the others I'd tried to ensure a variety of topics
  1. Coaching With the Brain in Mind
  2. Deconstructing Penguins
  3. 10 Minute Toughness
  4. How to Hug a Porcupine
  5. Daughters of Eve (currently reading)
  6. Silver Spoon Kids (started but didn't get far)
  7. Return to Life Through Contrology
  8. 1000+ Little Things Happy Successful People Do Differently
  9. *And Then They Won Gold (currently reading)
  10. *The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up
Fiction/Novels - I'm having a tough time being intentional with fiction but here goes!
  1. The Book Thief
  2. Orphan Train
  3. Boys in the Boat
  4. *Fallen (from my 2015 Books to Movies list - YA fantasy romance - didn't really like it, but couldn't stop reading!)
  5. *The Storied Life of AJ Fikry (really enjoyed this one)
  6. * The Last Letter From Your Lover (currently reading - also from Books to Movies list)
Kids - books the kids are reading that I want to read also
  1. Out of My Mind (great!)

  7. The City of Ember
  8. Esperanza Rising
  9. Spirit Animals books 1-?
  10. Ruby Holler

DayBook 2.16.15

FOR TODAY - Happy Presidents' Day (last time I wrote a DayBook was MLK Day!)

Outside my window... lots o' snow! I bet we got 4 in over night, and it is still coming. Only bummer about the snow is that Kate and I need to drive up into the mountains in it. Fingers crossed for good roads.

I am hearing... almost total quiet. A little hum of the fridge and the water in my tea kettle simmering

I am feeling... not so great, to be honest. I think I brought a little tummy souvenir home from Mexico. Blah. Symptoms haven't been bad, but I've been really tired, lacked an appetite and had NO MOTIVATION the last 4-5 days. I feel a bit better this morning and woke up early. Hoping this week is a bit more productive.

I am thinking... that I really need to get on it and plan our 2015 Hawaii trip (have plane tickets but want to nail down some details)
I am thankful for... snow tires.
From the kitchen... did I mention my lack of appetite? Lots of cereal and ramen and fried eggs in our house the last week. Kate and I had popcorn and Naked juices for dinner while we watched a movie last night! Hopefully the food improves this week.
I am wearing... track pants, old tee shirt, fleece jacket, slippers, and my glasses. I am a sight to behold!
I am creating... nothing.
I am going... to trudge through the snow to feed the chickens when I'm done writing this. Feeding chickens in the snow is not my favorite chore (I don't mind on nice mornings!). Maybe I'll delegate to Kate...
I am reading... The Last Letter From Your Lover. Just started it yesterday. Excited to really get into it, because I've heard it is really good.
I am hoping... to get my mojo back this week.
Around the house... I read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up (not great but it did motivate me) while I was in Mexico. I felt pretty good the first day or two I was home and did a mass declutter. That "clutter" is currently filling my entry waiting to be donated.

In the homeschool room... homeschool didn't go so well this last week, and this week doesn't look promising with out of town friends and skiing taking up a lot of our time. That's the glory of homeschool! We seem to go in waves anyway, so it's all fine.

How I'm exercising... I'm not. See "How I'm Feeling." I also have a tough time adjusting back to the altitude. Hopefully this week will be better.
One of my favorite things... my Kindle. Who knew I'd like electronic books so much?!?

A few plans for the next week: there is not a lot planned this week. That's good.

Here is a picture I am sharing: candlelight yoga on my retreat (that's me in the left corner)

February Homeschool Plan

Hoping this this still seems easy once it is all written out...

  • IXL - on days we don't do MathUSee, kids manage themselves
  • Life of Fred - want to get this back out
  • MathUSee - Kate will do Epsilon Unit Test I this week and then progress at her own speed (although I'd really like to get her through Unit Test 2 by mid-March when we leave for Hawaii), and Jack should be through Delta Unit Test 2 by the end of Feb
  • Times Tales DVD - continue almost daily for Jack, may start pulling out the worksheets to practice writing/timing facts
Language Arts
  • Scribblers online writing class (Kate) - short story class just started and will continue through Feb
  • Tutoring (Jack) - 3x/week
  • First Language Lessons Level 4 - continue to do 3-4 lessons/week with goal to finish all main lessons by mid March when we leave for Hawaii
  • SpellingUSee - waiting for Modern Milestones to be available sometime in mid-Feb (Americana was too easy for Kate so we are skipping ahead); and for Jack, I can't find workbook #2 for Jack and Jill (wondering if it got recycled by accident...), so I might just move him on to Wild Tales
  • Independent Reading - Kate will continue to read from Battle of the Books list - about an hour/day, Jack's reads we will pick as we go - about 15min 1-2x/day
  • Battle of the Books team - meets weekly for Kate
  • 5th grade essay contest - Kate - through homeschool program
  • Comprehension/Vocabulary/Book Reports - EdHelper questions/worksheets/vocab as applicable to reading plus book reports - may advance Jack to a more challenging book report format
  • Gratitude Journal 3-4x/week - maybe, maybe not - I really like the gratitude journal, but if it becomes just another thing to "check off the list" then it isn't worth it
History/Social Studies/Geography/Biography/Religion/Literature/Art
  • Story of the World Vol II - will do another 4-5 chapters in Feb with related books from library/videos online
  • The Old Testament/Illustrated Jewish Bible for Children - will probably continue to take a break
  • Review past poem memorization notebook - going to push through this
  • Audiobooks - finish The Knights' Tales by Gerald Morris; then I'd like to do The Magician's Nephew
  • Read Aloud - finish The Saga of Eric the Viking then start Ramayana: Divine Loophole
Science (this is one area I'm mostly "unschooling," and the kids get science in their weekly homeschool program)

  • Science packets as we feel like it
  • Science experiments as we feel like it
  • Visit Science museum
  • Maybe do some human body reading
  • Start thinking about science fair projects

  • Speech therapy (Jack) - 2x/week plus daily home practice
  • CNN Student News - 5x/week - might start a weekly journal about this for Kate
  • - 5x/week
  • Keyboarding Without Tears - Level 3 -1-2x/week
  • Cursive Without Tears (Jack) - maybe
  • Latin (Kate) - maybe
  • Homeschool Enrichment Program - weekly
  • Swim Team 3-4x/week plus dry land training weekly plus 2 swim meets in Jan
  • Ski School plus fun skiing - lots in Feb!
  • Tennis lessons - once a week or so as we are able to schedule
  • Field Trips - science museum to see Silk Roads exhibit and at least another 2-3 educational outings

Books to Movies 2015

I really enjoyed working through the list of books to movies in 2014 (even if I did a better job reading the books than watching the movies! Gotta get going on my movie watching... I put the updated list at the end of this blog entry). I made this list by combining a few lists around the blogosphere and thought I'd try again this year. 45 books (I've already read 8 of them, yet I've only read 8 of them!) is a bit daunting, but even though I won't read them all, I like having a good list to reference when I'm not sure what to read next. I starred the ones I plan to read first, and I will probably narrow down the list when I have time to consider what I really would like to read. I mostly can't imagine watching all 55 movies... that's over 100 hours of my life...
  1. Insurgent
  2. The Ninth Life of Lewis Drax
  3. Paper Towns*
  4. The World Made Straight
  5. The Mortdecai Trilogy
