Camping 2013 - Natural Bridges

Originally we had planned to camp at Natural Bridges National Monument for one night, but I got all nervous that there wouldn't be a spot in the middle of Memorial Day weekend. Probably would not have gotten one in the park, but there were plenty of BLM spots all around. That's okay. We'll go back sometime since it is supposed to be one of the darkest places in America. No light pollution. And I'm kinda on a constellation kick right now.

We spent a few hours, did a short hike, and got our Junior Ranger badges. I didn't realize until this visit that there is a difference between an arch and a bridge (arches are formed by wind, bridges by water).

Jack was pretty sure that
 these are mountain lion tracks!
There were petroglyphs by this bridge,
but can't really see them in the photo

Hot day for hiking

Camping 2013 - Mesa Verde

After Sand Dunes NP, we spent 3 nights in Mesa Verde. Kate, Jack and I were here 2 years ago, but it was off season. Not much was open our first trip, but this trip the kids definitely earned their Junior Ranger badges. We learned a lot. And had fun.

Campsite with loads of deer in the open space behind us

And Other Randomness
But I'm NOT tired!
Huh?
Using viewfinders to look at Cliff Palace
But close siblings are really more fun to look at

Camping 2013 - Sand Dunes

A bit behind on this. The first 2 nights of our trip we spent at Sand Dunes National Park. A bit embarrassing that the parks is so close to us and that we had never been. Kids loved it. While I found the geography fascinating, I got tired of it all pretty quickly. The sand was really difficult to hike plus it was really hot in the heat of the day. After 2 nights, there was sand EVERYWHERE. In sleeping bags, in the car, in the food, in all body creases. I think it took me 3 showers to get off all the sand that was plastered to my scalp...

Lots of pictures of (surprise, surprise!) sand dunes!

Nina also LOVED the dunes!

Creek in front of the dunes

Jack could have built dams
and rerouted water all week
Nice campsite with dunes as the backdrop

Campsite climbing tree
Kids riding in back while we drove up the pass
Picnic by a beaver lodge
(there were LOTS of beaver dams/lodges in the park)
And we also went sledding on the sand dunes. Gotta find the pics and videos of that.

Right Now

Painting the guest room today.

Realized a small writing desk in the room would be perfect.

Checked Craigslist and 30 min later...

Ta da! And only $30!

Trying to decide if I should paint it green or turquoise. Leaning towards green...

Hi

I'm here. Crazy couple of weeks. Doesn't look like the crazy is going to let up anytime soon. I'll be back eventually.

I do want to let real life friends know that there is something screwy going on with my iphone. I'm not getting texts nor able to send texts to some people (but texts are fine with others. Screwy). If you send me a text and get no response, I'm not ignoring you. I am just probably not getting it. Call or email me. Blah!

Tadpole Update

Can't remember how long we've had these lil'guys... At least 6 weeks?

9 hatched and grew from teeny tiny to kinda-gross-big. Two died while we were off adventuring last week. We lost another within an hour of getting them home. Seems they are most vulnerable (for us) at the almost full frog stage.

I've been most astounded by the varying rates of individual development since they all hatched within 24 hours of each other.

Some still full on tadpoles

One with back legs

Hey! You look like a frog!!

Caterpillars and ladybug larvae arrived yesterday. We usually raise them once a year. Might do it twice this summer just because I love watching them.

May Miles

Not so bad for a long weekend in California and an almost 2 week camping trip last month...

Tennis - 20 hours = 80 miles
Run (& hike) - 34.25 miles (I had the best of intentions to run while camping, but no showers = no desire to run!)
Bike - 9 miles = 3 miles (This # is going to go up this month. Hopefully)
May Total = 117.25 miles
YTD Total = 557.5 miles

40 for 40 Review

Sat down to do my 40 for 40 review. Coincidentally, the last time I reviewed it was exactly a year ago! Did I mention that I decided to give myself until the end of 2013? I think I'm going to change some things on my list. Some aren't going to happen, and some I now think are stupid. :) I'm even thinking maybe I'll replace some of the stupid ones with some more challenging ones and give myself the whole decade! Even as I write that, I'm thinking that it is a good idea...
