Daybook 4.30.13

FOR TODAY
Outside my window... outside my window? I'm outside my window right now. Enjoying a little morning sunshine with my chai before heading off to tennis (I have 4.5 hours of tennis scheduled for today! Who wants to give me a leg massage tonight?!?). Hard to believe it was snowing this time last week.
I am thinking... a lot about the motivational speech we heard from Janet Evans over the weekend. What I heard and probably needed to hear was the idea of sacrificing instant gratification for future reward. Also that champions need to know how to lose as well as they know how to win. And drink lots of water.
I am thankful for... sunglasses. I never wore sunglasses until we moved to Colorado. Now I rarely am without them.
From the kitchen... This week is devoted to cleaning out the fridge. I cooked a bunch over the weekend, so we have lots of leftovers - couscous salad, egg salad, spaghetti, etc. Also need to use up a bunch of veggies and fruit. This morning I had toast spread with avocado, topped with a fried egg (from my chickens - still love that!), and sprinkled with my shallot chive salt. Yum. (Idea a la my friend Nona)
I am wearing... a tennis skirt. I should just sleep in tennis skirts.
I am creating... nada.
I am going... to try to get some actual work done between tennis today. Lots o' laundry (always!), homeschool room needs a pick up (again!), and then there is that darn to do list!
I am reading... Finished Grass for His Pillow, and on to #3 Brilliance of the Moon.  And Mind Gym. Still.
I am hoping... for an extra 24 hours this week.
I am hearing... the grackles! The grackles have moved into our yard like they do every year. They are noisy and bothersome. They dive bomb the dog and cats and people. They poop everywhere. But I kinda like them. They'll leave in a few weeks after they hatch their babies.

Around the house... I might frame a few prints if I find time this week.

One of my favorite things... Spring. Can't believe today is the last day of April already.

A few plans for the rest of the week: It's going to be a fun week! But I can't spill the beans yet. So exciting...

Here is a picture I am sharing: Or two. Peeps loves to be on my shoulder.

Homeschool Moment

Wednesday. Some snow and some sunshine. One of the best days of the season.

Right Now

Look who we found peeking in our window...

Of course, he probably was looking for a handout as tourists unfortunately often feed them.

Not getting anything from us. Upsetting to see him so tame and seemingly becoming dependent on humans.

But still pretty cool to see him.

Sneaking in a last day of family skiing.

Loaded up in Matt's new vehicle. We've owned it for 2 weeks, and this is my first ride!

Lifts have closed at most ski spots, but there is more snow now than all winter! Finally...

Can practically snowshoe onto the roof!

DayBook 4.23.13

FOR TODAY
Outside my window... it's snowing! Again. I know I'm supposed to be happy for the moisture, but I really would like to wear some spring clothes.

I am thinking... about layering rugs in my living room. Everyone in my life has said (directly or indirectly) that this is a bad idea. That's usually a sign for me that I should do it.
I am thankful for... the one day a week that my kids go to homeschool "school." I love having them around so much, but I also enjoy a break.
From the kitchen... I've been a busy bee in this room. Hamburger buns, taquitos in the freezer, meat cooked in the fridge, more frozen sandwiches crepes in the fridge (with lemon and sugar for breakfast this morning). So nice to have those things on hand when we are hungry and in a hurry.
I am wearing... yoga pants with fleecy lining, my big fisherman sweater, slippers. It's a stay at home kinda day.
I am creating... nada.
I am going... to do a lot of laundry today. Fun.
I am reading... finished The Host (fun, different premise, a little angsty at times, fairly predictable), Tree Spirited Woman (a gift from a friend - an easy yet insightful read) and Across the Nightingale Floor (always like a good forbidden love story, like the setting, will read the whole series) and just started Grass for His Pillow (sequel to above)Still reading Mind Gym. Still really like it. Still taking it slow.
I am hoping... for so little, yet so much.

I am hearing... the furnace. Thank goodness for a working furnace!

Around the house... my tennis clinic in Denver today got cancelled due to the weather, so I am going to use my suddenly free day to get some things done. Nothing big, just catch up as it feels like things are on the edge of falling into complete disarray. I also want to try some rearranging. Surprise, surprise.

One of my favorite things... Audible

A few plans for the rest of the week: so far, this week is NOT going as planned. Oh, well. Going to try to sneak in one more family ski day this week. Also have a fundraising breakfast, lacrosse practice and game for Jack, swim meet for Kate, not so much tennis for me. Bummer.

Here is a picture I am sharing: Right now. Our lovely spring weather

To Do List

I want to get back to my To Do List. Not that anyone else cares what is on my list for the week, but it does help me to feel slightly more accountable when I announce what I am going to do publicly.

  1. Review/balance finances
  2. Fill out Kate's camp forms
  3. Register kids' for Apple One to One time
  4. Figure out home phone voicemail (checked today - we have 107 new messages!!! Oops...)
  5. Mail box at post office
  6. Drop off Zappos return at UPS store
  7. Make hamburger buns
  8. Freeze crockpot kidney beans
  9. Make banana muffins
  10. Buy spray paint

Right Now

Beautiful spring morning. Too many eggs in the fridge, and kids wanted crepes. Making a double batch.

My crepe station. New lefse stick from last weekend's Minnesota trip (what a pain to carry that on the plane!) also works amazingly well for crepes. No burnt finger tips!

Homeschool Moment(s)

Kids had well visits at the doctor yesterday (everyone is healthy... and tall!), so we spent the rest of the morning out and about just enjoying life.

Day Book 4.15.13

FOR TODAY
Outside my window... It's spring!! There are buds on my lilac bushes. More than barely buds, buds that make the bushes take on a green hue. I imagine they'll look greener and greener every day. I can't wait for them to bloom purple. Can't wait to take in the deep, unique scent. Eat my meals outside with lilacs all around.

I am thinking... (still thinking lilacs!) that I only get to see the lilacs once a year. I'll probably experience blooming lilacs only 80 something times in my life (God willing), and I didn't notice them or took them for granted the first 15ish times. When I think of the limits of my experience, it makes me want to fully take in every moment I am fortunate enough to have. How many life experiences are like that? You don't notice or realize the wonder at first, and you only get to experience the joy sporadically. Maybe the space between is what makes it so special. Maybe if the lilacs bloomed year round, I wouldn't notice how much I love them. Maybe it takes the other seasons to appreciate them. And what if I could have my lilacs all year after years of only spring experiences? Would I love them as much? Maybe after knowing the space and seasons in between, maybe, hopefully, I would fully appreciate them.
I am thankful for... travels.
From the kitchen... I have NO IDEA what I'm going to make this week... and we have no food in this house!
I am wearing... black pixie pants (I'm am not going to admit how many days in a row I've worn these!), grey and black striped tee from GAP (I love their tall sizes) and a long, camel, cashmere sweater.
I am creating... a bit of order in the house after being gone for 4 days. Slowly but surely. And I'm making a couple gifts.
I am going... to the library to get all our reserved books.
I am reading... finished The House at Riverton on the plane to Minnesota. If I was a writer, I would want to write like this author. Started The Host. Looking forward to the story. Easy and mindless yet so entertaining.  Still reading Mind Gym. It is slow going not because it isn't good, but because I'm really trying to process as I read. And still only pages away from being done with The Mastery of Love. I think this one needs a re-read.
I am hoping... that Jack feels better soon. He puked in the middle of the night. Welcome home, Mom!

I am hearing... the fridge hum, something draining in the sink. You know what isn't on this list? I am smelling... right now it is sandalwood incense that I'm burning.

Around the house... rugs have all arrived. Need to hang some artwork and some finishing touches in the living room and new dining room. Then I'll focus on our new family room. THEN I want to remodel the kitchen. And add a master suite. And a back porch.

One of my favorite things... cake.

A few plans for the rest of the week: mostly normal stuff: tennis clinics and matches, swim team, lacrosse, homeschool activities, etc. Also a doctor appt for the kids and a donation pick up scheduled.

Here is a picture I am sharing: From my only Minnesota run. The best of intentions... thwarted by weather and shopping!

Hole in the Floor

I love the quirkiness of an old house. Especially my old house.

When we moved in, I was a bit surprised by the hole in the dining room wood floor.

Then I discovered it was part of the original call system. A buzzer fit in the hole. And the no-longer-functioning call box stayed with the house.
The hole has always been hidden under a rug. Rediscovered a few weeks ago changing rooms and again today changing rugs.

Kids love looking down into the basement from a different perspective. And dropping anything that will fit through the hole, only to run down the stairs to retrieve items. Or have someone there to catch.

I like to imagine being the lady of the house, serving dinner to my friends, and tapping the buzzer with my foot to call the servers.

Can't imagine how often the kids would call me with the buzzer if it still
worked. Guess I'm glad it doesn't.

Day Book 4.8.13

FOR TODAY
Outside my window... sunny and lovely, but the weather is moving in soon. Gotta get out for my run before it cools down.

I am thinking... about doing a quarter year review. Look at my 40 for 40 list. I really, really need to review it. And maybe look at my New Year's goals again. I can't even remember what I listed!
I am thankful for... the ability to buy Matt a new vehicle. We finally got one Saturday morning. He's pretty darn happy, which makes me happy.
From the kitchen... made a second pot of split pea soup yesterday, quinoa burrito filling for lunches (plus I tried freezing some burritos, not sure how that will work), and ham & beans currently in the crockpot (trying to use up that Easter ham!). Will probably freeze soup and have beans for dinner with some skillet cornbread.
I am wearing... tennis skirt, white top, fleece jacket. Had a singles match this morning. 6-2, 6-3. Played well. Really happy with my serve. Really happy with my backhand. Overall pretty happy with my game.
I am creating... lots in my mind, just not much on the machine. I think I'll start a new crochet project that I can take on my trip this week.
I am going... to Minnesota!! So excited despite the cold weather predicted. I miss my Minnesota friends.
I am reading... loving The House at Riverton. It is very reminiscent of Downton Abbey. Same time period, big estate, similar "issues." Working slowly through Mind Gym. Trying to really concentrate on the information. Has already helped my tennis game. Pages away from being done with The Mastery of Love. Somehow I thought this book would be a big eye opener. Nope. But I might re-read it.

I am hoping... for a shower this afternoon. Some days we don't ask for much, do we?

I am hearing... the wind picking up outside.

Around the house... Shelves up over my desk. Looks great. New rugs should come this week. Then going to work on re-hanging artwork. Want Matt to put up the screen on my storm door. Weather has turned enough. Feeling the need for Matt to take the kids away  for a few days so I can get some work done.

One of my favorite things... my Eddie Bauer PJ pants. They come in tall so they are plenty long enough. This long-legged girl loves that.

A few plans for the rest of the week: doubles tennis match tomorrow, couple of tennis clinics (although I'm guessing one will be canceled for snow/cold), inspection of our new furnace, my Minnesota trip!

Here is a picture I am sharing: Our backyard squirrel who stole an ENTIRE bag of bread and dragged it up the tree!

March Miles

How is it possibly April already?!? Thought my miles would be low due to 2 weeks of sick kids, my decision to not run the half marathon this month (thinking about one in June), and less tennis due to court renovations. Not as bad as I expected. Time on the tennis court should start skyrocketing this month. Yeah!

Tennis - 8 hours
Swim - .5 mile (only in the pool once all month! Gotta get better... maybe once the outdoor pool opens)
Run - 68.75 miles (those long runs add up!)
March Total - 102.75 miles
2013 YTD - 280.5 miles

Day Book 4.1.13

FOR TODAY
Outside my window... overcast. Snow is coming tonight.

I am thinking... that I ate too many jelly bellies and chocolate eggs today. I was so good yesterday. Made up for it today. Feel yucky. What cures too much sugar? Just time?
I am thankful for... early bedtimes!
From the kitchen... Easter dinner was lovely - Honeybaked ham, Hoosier potato casserole, blintzes with strawberries, and a new kale salad from my friend Nona (so yummy, going to make more tomorrow!). Planning on split pea soup with leftover ham. Maybe tomorrow? Want to make some more buns for freezer sandwiches. They've been a big hit. Also want to roast a chicken.
I am wearing... old jeans, my Forward Direction t-shirt, black cardigan and tennies.
I am creating... got some time with the sewing machine last week. After costumes were done, I basted and started quilting an older quilt top. I'm not thrilled with the top so I decided to try some new quilting designs. Going well but slow.
I am going... to have a busy week. Makes me want to crawl under the covers and take a long nap.
I am reading... since I last blogged about reading, I've finished April & Oliver (eh), The Divorce Party (didn't really like it but then I liked the ending) and The Selection (so bad, yet so good... 3 weeks until the sequel comes out!). Current book is The House at Riverton. I've had some nonfiction ADD - still working through Mind Gym. Started and almost done with The Mastery of Love.

I am hoping... that everyone stays well. Jack was really sick all last week, Kate the week before. Operating on poor sleep is not my forte! Two weeks of poor sleep is enough to do me in.

I am hearing... absolute quiet. Sitting in our front room. Matt has kids at swim team. Occasional car drives by or bird chirps, but that's it!

Around the house... ordered a rug for our "new" family room (the old dining room) and found one for the living room (just want Matt to help me decide what size to get). It feels like mostly loose ends now.

One of my favorite things... sunshine!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Kate is taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, my sister-in-law's movie has a showing here in town, friend's book launch/girls' night, hair cut, plus all our regular stuff.

Here is a picture I am sharing: Here's one of me! Doesn't happen very often!
