Daybook 6.20.11

Outside my window... hot, hot, hot.

I am thinking... about a sad scene I saw this morning. A fawn has just been hit and killed by a car and the mama deer was just standing there seeming like she didn't know what to do. Just sorta looking at her baby and looking at the cars going by. I burst into tears and can't get it out of my mind.

I am thankful for... wireless internet.

From the kitchen... on vacation for the week! But feeling inspired to cook when I get home.

I am wearing... a black skirt, a graphic tee and a citron colored, light sweater (it is miserably hot outside but the A/C is so cold!). And my Dansko sandals. Love 'em!

I am creating... again, nothing this week. But after a few weeks of feeling uninspired, I'm missing my sewing machine and looking forward to some time with it next week.

I am going... to see Tree of Life with my sister in a little bit.

I am reading... just finished Rosie this morning. I thought it was just okay as I read it, but now that I've finished, I really like it. I'll start a new novel this evening. I've also been reading Morning Sun on a White Piano: Simple Pleasures and the Sacramental Life. I heard the author preach at our church last year and was inspired to read his books. This is the first one I've gotten to.

I am hoping... for no rain for our family pictures on Friday morning.

I am hearing... background music, muffles of conversations, the whoosh of the milk frother

Around the house...
I gotta clean the basement when I get home...

One of my favorite things... movie popcorn. It's so horrible yet so good.

A few plans for the rest of the week: swimming at Barton Springs, bat watching at Bracken Cave, family photo session, resort fun with my side of the family

Here is picture I am sharing: me and my sister's hedgehog boots. Who knew hedgehogs could be so snuggley! And cute!!

Right Now

Old roommate, good friend. Too many drinks, never enough time together.

Right Now

(okay, so this isn't actually right now anymore, but I couldn't get my phone to connect with my blog. But it was "right now" when I wrote this last night!)

- a scene from my quick, evening run on Town Lake.
- I love running near sea level
- I passed a relatively fit guy... and I'm usually so slow that I rarely pass anyone. It felt good.
- Austin is a great town but there is a lot of traffic and it is too freakin' hot!! Even at 8pm.
- It isn't such a good idea to run after consuming 3 mini burgers and sweet potato fries at Phil's Ice House plus coffee ice cream with Heath Bar crumbles at Amy's (but I still passed that guy!)

Daybook 6.13.11

Outside my window... a perfect Colorado morning.

I am thinking... that these silly Daybook posts are so therapeutic for me, even if no one reads them.

I am thankful for... the kiddos. My goodness do I love them. Even in their crankiest forms.

From the kitchen... still closed for business. Although I have some old bananas that I want to turn into bread. Maybe later this afternoon.

I am wearing... a Liberty of London nightie that I got from Target a year or so ago. Plus a robe and my faithful slippers. I'm proud to say that I am still in my jammies at almost 10am.

I am creating... nothing new. Just haven't felt up to it lately.

I am going... to the eye doctor with Jack this afternoon.

I am reading... haven't felt like reading much either. Seems like I fall asleep whenever I sit to read. I am enjoying Rosie even if it is taking me a long time to get through it. The Heart and the Fist is still my current audiobook, but I haven't been in the mood to listen either.

I am hoping... that the grackle fledgling we found on our driveway yesterday is doing well. We moved him into the bushes and kept Oscar the cat inside. We saw the momma grackle feeding and encouraging him, and he was gone this morning. Saw a fledgling sitting in a lilac bush this morning. Going to assume that it's our little guy.

I am hearing... lawn mowers, grackles and highway traffic.

Around the house...
the sconces didn't go up so easy last week. Hopefully they'll be up today. The one that is up looks great. Now I just need the backordered mirror I ordered to arrive. I'm guessing I'll be waiting until August. Garden is looking good. Didn't plant the back porch pots last week. Maybe I'll just skip them this year.

One of my favorite things... unrushed mornings.

A few plans for the rest of the week: eye doctor appointment for Jack, swim team for Kate, tennis match, cousins, and Keahi.

Here is picture I am sharing: I sometimes refer to the ranch where Matt and I were married. They have been fighting off the wildfires. Sounds like the main house is now safe, but the surrounding area is almost completely burned. Thought I'd share some images that we've been sent. Almost unbelievable for me.

Right Now

After just me & 3 kids and a contentious HOA meeting, I deserve this...

Look what I got to see today! It was a newborn fawn. It couldn't have been more than a few hours old as it was still pretty darn unsteady on its little legs. The photo (from my phone!) doesn't begin to do it justice. I had to pull over to the side of the road to take it and didn't want to get too close as to scare them off. The little guy looked just like Bambi with little spots on his back. The cutest thing I've seen in a long time and the highlight of my day.

Daybook 6.6.11

Outside my window... sunny and hot. Still a bit of haze from the wildfires burning south of us. Birds are chirping endlessly. We have grackles nesting in our Blue Spruces that are noisy and chase the squirrels, the cat and the dog if they come anywhere near.

I am thinking... that there will be no more daytime runs until fall. It is just too hot. I went at about 9:30 this morning and thought that I was going to DIE.

I am thankful for... a water spigot right next to my garden bed and the time sprinkler heads IN the garden.

From the kitchen... salads, salads, salads. I think we'll have our favorite strawberry avocado salad for dinner tonight.

I am wearing... yellow tech top that doubled this morning as a running top then a tennis top and white tennis skirt and bare feet. I'm hot, sweaty, stinky and in need of a shower.

I am creating... too many quilts. Against my better judgement, I've started cutting out a new quilt top. My machine won't be ready until tomorrow or Wednesday, and I really miss it.

I am going... to find some time to write this week. I think I need to get away to a coffee shop as I'm too distracted at home.

I am reading... finished up Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith. I really liked it once I got into it, and my copy is so beat up from the trip. Decided to stay on my Anne Lamott kick and read Rosie. Didn't listen much to The Heart and the Fist while traveling. No time plus I don't think Matt was much into it. Looking forward to listening to it this week.

I am hoping... that life stays good like this for awhile.

I am hearing... just those darn grackles.

Around the house... want to plant my flower pots this week. Also going to have a ceiling fan installed in the guest bedroom and some sconces hung next to the fireplace (we have 100 year old plaster walls that make sconce hanging quite the production!)

One of my favorite things... the iPod touch. Our kids have them (but are only allowed to use them for travel), and it is so nice to have music, movies and games all on one little device.

A few plans for the rest of the week: relax, tennis, run, zoo camp, ice cream with Miss D, dinner with friends, pool time... classic summer activities.

Here is picture I am sharing: Delicate Arch hike with the kids last week

  • Download photos from camera
  • Google pop-up campers and sand fleas (we all have these itchy, little bites...)
  • Sleep soundly in my own bed!

My last full day of vacation. Heading home tomorrow. I love our little adventures, but I also love our home and routine. Looking forward to downloading and sharing the photos from the camera.

We've been completing unplugged for most of this trip. No computer, no internet, no cell service, no distractions. So lovely. I'm back on today but trying to stick to just the parts of being connected that I love. I'll catch up on email some other day.

I do want to share that I am going to be joining 52 weeks, 52 lists starting tomorrow. Thought I'd share in case anyone wants to join me. And just because I love lists, my top 10 reasons I love living in Colorado (in no particular order!)
  1. All the national parks and monuments
  2. Hot springs!!
  3. Amazingly beautiful road trips
  4. The proximity to Utah
  5. Cool summer nights
  6. Skiing
  7. The proximity to Texas
  8. Living where others come for vacation
  9. Wildlife everywhere
  10. Hiking

WIP Wednesday

Happy June 1st! This is an easy WIP update since my machine is in the shop getting a tune up, and I've only been doing some hand stitching. My machine won't be ready for pick-up until next Wednesday, so this coming week will be pretty slow as well. I think I'll start cutting for a new quilt, because I don't have enough on my list...

WIP List:
16 projects total
11 on the back burner
1 completed (a baby quilt - I'll blog on it sometime)
1 in binding stage (another baby quilt - SO close to being finished with that darn binding)
1 in quilting stage (crosses quilt - I did get all the uneven quilting stitches pulled out)
1 needing basting (FRMQG challenge quilt - no change from last week)
1 needing piecing (Lil' Twister - I did get my aggressive trimming spots fixed with interfacing)
0 started (woohoo!)
