Hoo-Hoo

We were standing inside this evening when I heard the distinct call of an owl. Haven't heard or seen an owl in the 5 years we've been in Colorado, so we ran outside to see if we could find him. There he was up near the top of one of our Blue Spruces. He was pretty camouflaged so I'm surprised we spotted him.
There was a robin hoping around the nearby branches letting Mr. Owl know he was NOT wanted.
I love this one of him winking at us.
Wildlife in our backyard makes me so happy... sigh...

(I think Nina Sprinkles is too big for an owl, but we brought her inside just to be safe!)

I Hate Hills!

2nd half done. 10+ min slower than my Austin time but this course was really hilly and HARD and at altitude. Did i mention the hills?? So I'm happy.

Tomorrow

July 17th. My 2nd half marathon. While there is certainly some anticipation, I'm neither overly nervous nor overly excited. I feel well prepared but have no pressure to meet any goal other than to finish. (Although I just read the August issue of Runner's World with a big half marathon article - written by my friend Dimity - and now I'm inspired to train for a 3rd half to beat my very slow PR with a not-quite-as-slow PR!)

Earlier this week I was reviewing our schedule on the calendar when I realized that I was in Minnesota this time last year. I even remember that last July 17th was an overcast and cool day (how I would love to have similar weather tomorrow). I took this photo early that morning. It is one of my favorites from the trip, and I hung a framed print in my office. Looking at it now, I can't help but ponder the last 365 days. An entire year.
So much can happen in a year. Last July 17th, a run over 5 miles wasn't even in the realm of my possibilities, and now I've completed one half marathon, will have a second done by noon tomorrow, and will do a triathlon by summer's end. Last summer neither of my children had started school. In just over a month, I'll have both kids in school full time. And so many other changes. Makes me wonder what changes are ahead and where I will be this time next year.

I imagine that I'll be thinking about all this as I run tomorrow (when, of course, I am not focusing on being in the moment!). Where I was, where I am, what has changed, and what has remained constant despite the passing of time.

Quarterly Resolutions Update

Still enjoying the busyness that is this week.

My sister arrives tonight. Looking forward to her visit.

We are half way through 2010, so I thought I better do a review of my 2o1o resolutions. I'm pretty happy with what I've accomplished so far.
  1. Run a 1/2 marathon DONE!!
  2. Run a 5K in my goal time STILL haven't run an official 5K in 2010. Soon, soon. Certainly by the end of summer.
  3. Go to yoga 1-2x/week I've given up on yoga until school starts back again. I did buy a Groupon from my favorite yoga place for a month of unlimited yoga. Plan to redeem that in August. I've been a pretty big fan of hot yoga for a long time, but I'm thinking about broadening my horizons this fall.
  4. Check off two more states towards my goal of visiting all 50 (6 left - Mass, Oregon, Rhode Island, Delaware, Michigan, South Carolina). I have plans to visit Massachusetts by the end of July. Not sure what the other state will be nor when I will visit.
  5. Visit 2 new national parks with the kids We went to Canyonlands NP last month and plan to see Acadia NP by the end of July.
  6. Make a quilt. DONE!! I've made several (can't share them yet!) with multiple more in progress.

June Running

June miles = 85
2010 YTD miles = 422.5
Miles/month to meet 1000 mile goal = 96.25
(going to be a stretch to get there, but I'm going to keep tracking!)

Random running thoughts:
  • Now running in my orthotics full time. My first long in them gave me a whopping blister on the bottom of my foot (actually, I didn't finish that run because the blister HURT. Then I didn't run for a few days because I didn't want the blister to ruin my retreat)
  • Just got two new pairs of shoes. The ones that I've always run (except in teal this time), plus I got a pair of trail runners. I've wanted to get a pair of trail runners because my light hikers are too stiff for running down the trail after doing the incline and my regular runners didn't seem tough enough when I ran in Arches. When I saw that they came out with a trail version of my running shoe, I decided it was worth trying them out. Despite being so anxious to get them, I haven't actually run in them yet, so we'll see.
  • Half marathon #2 is less than 2 weeks away. Eeek! In some ways I feel more prepared for this one, and in some ways less prepared. My base is much stronger this time, but I haven't been quite as rigid with my training schedule as I was for Austin. Plus this one is at altitude. We'll see how it all plays out. It's all just for fun anyway.
  • Have a practice "mini" triathlon this week! ACK!
  • Have a my first injury that is impairing my running routine. Pulled a muscle in my right thumb while cutting thick fabric for a quilt (how kooky is that?!?). Doesn't actually affect my strides, but I can't hold my big or my small water bottle with that hand now. I switched to a belt which I think I like it better anyway.
  • Been having some left shoulder pain when I run (seeing that I used to work with cardiac patients, I immediately thought I was having a heart attack!). Saw a massage therapist last week. She thinks it is tightness in my right hip being referred to my left shoulder. Might be correct since my right hip is usually the place I hurt when I up my miles too fast. Need to start back to yoga!!
  • Tall Mom on the Run opened up her 1000+ Mile Club to anyone who has at least 333 miles. I qualify, so I'm joining!
