Jet Dry Substitute

When we bought our new dishwasher a couple of years ago, I was paying attention to the energy star rating, but it never occurred to me that the dishwasher we purchased would "require" a rinse aid to work properly. When the dishes weren't getting very clean and weren't drying at all (even with the abhorred heat dry!), I pulled out the user's manual. There it was in black and white. The dishwasher "requires" a rinse aid to work properly. I knew immediately that I wanted to find an environmentally friendly rinse aid (although I admit to using Jet Dry until I figured it out!).

What is a good substitute for Jet Dry? Vinegar! Works great as a rinse aid. Just fill up the rinse aid dispenser once a week or so. The dishes are clean and not nearly as wet!

I'll have to try that, it's so much more affordable than jet dry.

I've been doing this for a few months and LOVE it! It works fabulously. Actually I think it actually works better than Jet Dry. :-)

Great idea. Does it matter what kind of vinegar . . . white or cider?

Seriously? WOW! I had no idea. I hate how expensive and chemical-ly Jet Dry is. SUCH a great solution. Thanks!

What a great idea! I've been out of Jet Dry for a while, and the dishes have been coming out quite spotted. I just bought 3 bottles of vinegar last week at CVS (monthly ECB deal, plus I had coupons). I'm going to try this today!

Our dishwasher also "requires" Jet Dry. This is a much more affordable solution. Next time I need to fill up I'll give it vinegar instead of Jet Dry.

Are you kidding me? I love it. Thanks for the tip as my dishwasher requires a rinse agent too.

I do this too! It works great! We have REALLY hard water here, but vinegar does wonders!

Vinegar is fabulous stuff :) However,I hate dishwashers, period. I'd rather have the extra cupboard space LOL

I use vinegar as well. I designate one bottle just for the dishwasher-by putting a few drops of food coloring in so I know when the dispenser is empty!

I wonder if that's why our dishes aren't coming out as clean...I will be trying this tonight. Thanks!

Our dishwasher does ok without rinse aide but this is stored away.

That is hilarious that you posted this today. I just tried this last night and it worked great. Vinegar has been my new best friend lately.

Thanks for the tip - I'll have to give it a try!

I shall have to try it once ours is out of it's warranty. I have a feeling it would void the warranty if I tried it and something went wrong ;)

I use vinegar all the time in my washing machine though.

I can't believe I didn't think of this before. I use white vinegar for EVERYTHING. It's great stuff. Thanks for the tip!

Y'know, the guy who installed my dishwasher actually TOLD me that we could just use plain ol' vinegar!

DO NOT DO THIS! I tried it, and it worked well for several months, until I noticed that it was stripping the finish off my dishes. It quickly removed all the designs from plastic cups and glasses, which I didn't mind so much. However, now all of my Pfaltfzgraff plates and bowls are ruined because it stripped the glaze off them. They are now chalky and soak up liquid.

I have started using vinegar and its been great. But when I run out, its the worst.

Can peroxide be used the same way? Its safe for rinsing your mouth... but I'm wondering if it would be OK on my dishes when mixed with detergent and heat.

Unfortunate that bots have posted to this comment area...

Anyway, I just looked up the MSDS for Jet-Dry: 15-30% citric acid & some petroleum-derived preservatives. I haven't tried vinegar yet, but seeing citric acid as the main agent makes me think that vinegar would be just as effective.
