Blog Giveaway: Holiday Gift to Charity!

I got this idea a few weeks ago while reading the blog Country Dawn and pondering her post about Oprah's Favorite Things. I thought it would be fun to do a charity giveaway! I don't think there has been a blog giveaway like this before (at least not that I know of!). For every comment left on this post, I will donate $1 to the charity of the winner's choice*. So leave a comment and tell me which charity you choose. I'll close the comments out Sunday Dec 30th at 10pm, randomly choose the winner, and make the donation! So post a link on your blog and email your friends. Let's see how much we can raise for charity!

*I reserve the right to deem any charity unsuitable for the contest. The charity must be a nonprofit and must be legit (no i-need-a-new-car.org). I also will not donate to any group that I adamantly oppose (I can't actually think of any group that I oppose, but just in case someone finds something like killthetrees.org or clubtheseals.org, I want to be able to refuse to donate). I also reserve the right to limit the donation to $500 - although if for some crazy reason the comments get past 500, I will honestly consider more.

Possibly the best "give-away" idea I've come across. Love it. My vote goes to the American Cancer Society, near and dear to my heart.

This is a great idea and such a fun way to learn about worthy causes. I'll put in a vote for http://en.arocha.org/home/ A Rocha, a conservation group that I love.

I also think "a charity giveaway" is a good idea. Anyway, whatever will be your choice, I really appreciate your work to give away charity. We should contribute to charities as much as possible to remove hunger and poverty from this world.
Best of luck with your quest. :-)

What a fabulous idea! This is so generous of you Kristen! If I win I choose the Children's Literacy Center to receive the donation. They are a wonderful, locally based organization that is dear to my heart. I have volunteered as a tutor for them and served on the board of directors and vintner dinner committee for several years:

Great idea! I will also vote for the National MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org - MS affects more women in CO than in any other state!!

Not a formal charity, but I do happen to be on a board 'the nest' for moms to be and I heard that a fellow nestie passed away shortly after delivering triplets. Her construction worker husband is distraught and not sure how he will raise the three on his own. Donations can be made to Jeff Hagenbuch, consumers credit union, 5940 Gull Road, Kalamazoo, M!. In the memoline, pls put Tina's memorial fund.

What - you're not giving away $3000 refrigerators with TVs in them?? :o

:)))

Thanks for the nod - glad I inspired you - and you put me to shame by putting your money where my mouth was!! :x

I wish I could match you... if I had the cash, I would!

But after reading the poster's response above, I have to donate to the triplets' daddy... I can't even imagine trying to raise three on your own when your wife just died! :( Awful...

We live charmed, blessed lives, all of us...

What a great idea, Kristen!

My choice is the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center. I am a great supporter of homebirth (with midwives or unassisted) and one of my dearest friends is a midwife there.

You can read more about the unique population they serve and about their donation process here.

Linked over from another blog. What a great idea!

I vote for Heifer International. (www.heifer.org) Nothing like saying that our comments purchased a cow! $500 = the gift of one cow, whose offspring will be passed onto another family...it's the gift that keeps on giving. :)

What a way to get tons of comments!! I don't have a special charity that I want to mention because there are so many good ones. But I love this idea you have. This is a great way to end the year.

fantastic idea!!

i'd vote for the Cottonwood Foundation -- a small nonprofit, volunteer run foundation that gives grants to grassroots groups around the world to help with projects that preserve the environment, empower local peoples, and sustain indigenous cultures.

i served on their board for a number of years and was always so impressed by how significant a small grant would be to the community groups funded.

thanks for such an inspiring blog giveaway!

Yea!! I choose the Environmental Working Group for all their good work. They have helped me be a better mom. On their website you can check out rankings for pesticides in produce and dangerous ingredients in sunscreens and cosmetics.

My vote is in support of the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center in Taos, NM. www.taosbirth.blogspot.com

With the sacredness of birth and the role of the mother becoming forgotten in this country, the Birth Center is truly a special place. Professional Midwives empower new mothers with the confidence to have a natural birth, while guiding families through the incredible experience with love and care.

I had my first child there and everything was a beautiful experience. I think more babies need to come into this world in an atmosphere of peace rather than fear; and the experience of birth thought of as a sacred passage, rather than a medical condition.

The Midwives at the Birth Center dedicate more of their time and lives than they get paid for, and this is a place that needs support to stay alive because it's so important.

My favorite non-profit is the northern New Mexico Midwifery Center which has been providing home- and birth center births for almost 30 years, regardless of the cient's ability to pay. They serve mostly Medicaid clients. They changed my life when I was pregnant by teaching me that my body is powerful and wise. They change the lives of all the mothers and babies they serve. They are love.

Kristen, what a fantastic thing you are doing!! A wonderful way to start the New Year!!

I'm going to throw my vote in also for the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center. The midwives here are amazing! They are loving, supportive and just everything a birth worker should be. In addition, they work hard to provide their services to all who need/desire them in these very low income communities. They do this by taking Medicaid (which pays very low in relation to what a birth actually costs) and often, taking no payment at all. This means that they also have to spend a great deal of time fundraising to meet their budget each year. Your donation would greatly help the midwives, and thereby all of the small communities of northern New Mexico.

Regardless of who "wins" though, You are amazing!!!

Blessings

Wonderful idea!!! More should do this... I also nominate the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center to be the recipient of your holiday gift!
"In Taos County, 27.5% of the population lives below poverty level, and unemployment is 15.7%. Approximately 85% of the Midwifery Center's clients are on pregnancy related Medicaid, which reimburses for midwifery services at a rate that does not cover what it costs to provide the services," according to the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center.
Please post this!
Cheers and happy new year!

Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center, yay! I went to high school with one of the great people there. This is for her.

I'll be fascinated to see how this works out.

Hide those email addresses, though, or you'll be sorry.

Thank you for this opportunity to mention an organization very dear to my heart. The Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center recently delivered my baby. They are an incredible group of women and give women in our community the opportunity to experience birth in a natural and beautiful way. Most of their clients are on medicaid and the center does not receive full payment for their expenses. Donations to the center are greatly appreciated. To fully appreciate how hard these women work, just witness one birth and you will see what a loving and nurturing environment they create for the families. Taos is so very lucky to have them.

Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center gets my vote. Wonderful, kind people.

Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center gets my vote as well. I was brought into this world with a midwife and I can't think of a worthier cause than helping more women like my mom to do the same.

Bless you for your generousity!

The clear choice is the triplets dad, he has more on his plate that anyone can imagine, grieving the loss of his wife, raising premature triplets, add to that the loss of his wife, her income, her experienced hands of motherhood. This man needs OUR help!

Anonymous said...

What a generous thing to do Kristen. My vote would be for a homeless shelter or food bank in your community.

I hope you will open your heart and help the people of Camden,NJ. There is a wonderful charity named New Covenant Ministries. They are nothing fancy just volunteers who have a willingness to reach out where they see needs and spread the love of Jesus. Isn't that what Christmas is all about? It is not a big organization and does not get many donations. The website address is www.streetministry.us.
PLEASE pick them!
Thank you.

I think what you are doing is wonderful. I support you 100%. I have already added Mickey as my green friend on FB. I do not have a charity choice, Im sure you have some great ideas for who needs your money the most. I only wanted to show my support and encourage your efforts with a reply. So, if you do choose me, randomly, then its a your choice pick!
Thank you.
